It was a video game: The Last of Us Trailer was Remarkable
On Monday, HBO published the first official teaser for their upcoming “The Last of Us” TV series, giving fans their first glimpse at the adaptation of the iconic, post-apocalyptic computer game. In 2023, when the show first airs, it will be a big deal.
A tough survivor named Joel (Pedro Pascal of “The Mandalorian”) travels across a United States devastated by a fatal sickness caused by the cordyceps fungus, much like in the PlayStation video game. Together with Ellie, a young girl played by “Game of Thrones” star Bella Ramsey, who is important in his search for a cure for the zombie-like illness that has ravaged civilization, he sets out to locate it.
Outbreak Day, the day on which the trailer was released, is a holiday celebrated by “The Last of Us” fandom. The original game set the beginning of the widespread cordyceps fungal outbreak in the United States on September 26. Gameplay elements from “The Last of Us” can be recognized in the trailer set to Hank Williams’ “Alone and Forsaken,” including Joel and Ellie attempting to escape a quarantine zone, two collapsing skyscrapers they must traverse, Ellie riding a merry-go-round with her close childhood friend Riley, and Joel running with his daughter Sarah at the start of the pandemic.
When afflicted with the cordyceps fungus, humans morph into grotesque creatures known as clickers that shamble around inhumanely. They grow spores like mushrooms all over their faces and have a ravenous appetite for human flesh. In the brief HBO teaser released this morning, you can get a glimpse of the clickers’ spine-chilling kind of echolocation, which they utilize because they can’t sight, to pursue their victims.
The rest of the cast includes Murray Bartlett as Frank, Nick Offerman as Bill, Jeffrey Pierce as Perry, and Anna Torv as Tess, as well as Pascal and Ramsey. Gabriel Luna plays Joel’s brother Tommy, and Merle Dandridge is Marlene, the leader of the rebel group the Fireflies. Nico Parker plays Joel’s daughter Sarah. The voice actors that portrayed Joel and Ellie in the video games, Troy Baker and Ashley Johnson, will also make appearances in the show, but their roles have yet to be revealed.
Craig Mazin, the Emmy-winning creator of “Chernobyl,” is joined as co-creator and executive producer by Neil Druckmann, co-president of video game firm Naughty Dog. Among the executive producers are Carolyn Strauss, Evan Wells, Asad Qizilbash, Carter Swan, and Rose Lam. The board of directors consists of Kantemir Balagov, Jasmila ‘bani, Ali Abbasi, Peter Hoar, Jeremy Webb, and Liza Johnson. PlayStation Productions, Word Games, The Mighty Mint, and Naughty Dog are all involved in the series’ development alongside Sony Pictures Television.
