Means of Alicent Hightower’s Green Dress
The fifth episode of House of the Dragon is a thrilling one. In spite of all the marriages, feasts, and fights, the most memorable part of the evening was when everyone was staring at Alicent Hightower’s clothing.
There was just a cursory discussion of its historical significance in the episode, but it’s vital to the plot. Let’s chat some more about the most well-known green dress in Westeros.
House of the Dragon, up until the fifth episode, has been building up to the moment when Alicent, dressed in a vibrant green gown, arrives at Rhaenyra’s wedding. Even though everyone observed the queen was late, it was up to Larys Strong, arguably the most astute character in House of the Dragon, to explain the significance of the color of her attire.

For starters, the queen’s lack of backing for the family and Rhaenyra is represented by the color green, which is a long cry from the typical black and crimson of House Targaryen. More importantly, Larys reveals that the Hightower in Old Town (Alicent’s family’s seat and the building from which they derive their name) shines green as a sign for battle, a detail not found in George R. R. Martin’s Fire & Blood but present in the program.
Alicent Hightower effectively declared war on House Targaryen due to what she saw as a violation of trust by Rhaenyra and King Viserys, who she blamed for forcing her father, Otto, out of King’s Landing and his position as the Hand of the King. Alicent’s decision to quit her uneasy friendship with Rhaenyra, which was never truly equal in any manner, was the first time she truly exercised her agency.
Obviously, the rest of Westeros will have to pick a side in this major rift between House Targaryen, but more significantly, the two factions will have to discover methods to distinguish themselves from one another. Hence, the significance of the clothing once again.
Without giving too much away, it’s probably helpful to know now that Alicent’s followers will be called the Greens, while Rhaenyra’s company will be called the Blacks, who stick with the traditional colors of House Targaryen. And as the Dance of the Dragons continues, these two camps will constitute our two main ones.
Who is Alicent Hightower
Lady Alicent Hightower, a member of the house of dragon, is Ser Otto Hightower’s daughter. Since her father serves as the King’s Hand, she has spent a considerable amount of her upbringing there. She became quite close to Princess Rhaenyra at this time. However, that connection will be tested when the violence in Game of Thrones increases. Who knows, maybe Alicent has the strength of character to win out.
